How to use the shift hours calculator

How it works

Each row is one shift: a start time and an end time. The duration is simply:

Shift length = end time − start time

If the end time falls before the start time, the shift is treated as crossing midnight, so 24 hours are added to the end before subtracting. That is why a 22:00 → 06:00 night shift correctly totals 8 hours, not −16.

Breaks

The calculator totals rostered time and does not deduct breaks. For paid-hours totals, either enter the shift in two parts around an unpaid break, or adjust the end time.

Nothing is saved

Your rota stays in this browser tab. Nothing is stored, sent, or recorded anywhere — refreshing the page clears it.

Example

A night shift from 22:00 to 06:00 = 8 hours. Five weekday shifts of 09:00–17:00 total 40 hours; add a Saturday night shift and the week comes to 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How are night shifts that cross midnight counted?

Automatically. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as running past midnight into the next day. A shift from 22:00 to 06:00 counts as exactly 8 hours.

Does this calculator deduct breaks?

No. It totals the time between each start and end. If your breaks are unpaid, shorten the shift times or split the day into two rows (before and after the break) so the total reflects paid time only.

Can I mix day shifts and night shifts in one week?

Yes. Each row is independent, so earlies, lates, and nights can all sit in the same list. Add or remove rows as needed.

Why show minutes as well as hours?

Payroll and timesheets often work in exact minutes. The total is shown both ways so you can copy whichever your system expects. Note this tool stores nothing — the rows exist only in your open browser tab.
