How to use the incident time difference calculator

How it works

The two date-times are subtracted:

Gap = second date-time − first date-time

The result is expressed three ways: a readable breakdown (days, hours, minutes, seconds), plus plain totals in hours, minutes, and seconds — the formats timelines and log summaries usually need. If the second entry is earlier, the gap is still shown as a positive duration and the page says so.

Built for timeline work

Reconstructing a sequence of events often means dozens of small subtractions. Enter the two timestamps exactly as recorded and let the calculator handle the calendar — month lengths, leap years, and clock changes included.

Example

From 08:00 on 1 January to 10:30 on 3 January is exactly 2 days, 2 hours, 30 minutes — 50.5 hours, or 3,030 minutes, in total.

Frequently asked questions

How is the gap between two date-times worked out?

Both date-times are converted to timestamps and subtracted. The result is broken down into whole days, hours, minutes, and seconds, and also shown as total hours, minutes, and seconds for easy copying into notes.

What if the second time is earlier than the first?

The calculator shows the same positive gap and notes that the order is reversed, so crossed entries in a log do not produce a negative number.

Does it handle daylight saving changes?

It uses your device's local time zone, so a span that crosses a clock change reflects the actual elapsed local time between the two entries, which is what a timeline needs.

Is anything about my entries recorded?

No. The two date-times are processed in your browser only. Nothing is stored, sent, or logged anywhere.
